So, if you want to look like an achiever, wherever possible, use an active voice.

Popular action CV verbs are:

  • Managed
  • Organised
  • Oversaw
  • Coordinated
  • Mentored
  • Trained
  • Collaborated
  • Reviewed

The more specifically you can describe past experience, the better the verbs that pop out.

Example 1:

  • “Acted as manager and monitored 30-member team.”

Could be instead:

  • “Managed 30-member team by visiting work site and communicating with personnel about issues.”

Example 2:

  • “Assisted with office duties.”

Could say:

  • “Handled clerical duties such as answering phone and entering client data into system.”

Example 3:

  • “Mentored associates.”

Could be:

  • “Mentored associates by monitoring and evaluating work and holding individual assessment meetings.”

Details bring out the better verbs. Plus, mentoring, managing, and assisting at one enterprise may be quite different at another. Your specific description shows exactly what part you played at a position.

Avoid “did,” “assisted,” and “acted as.” Show off your skills and expertise by using action verbs that promote your candidacy. Prove to the hirer why you are the best candidate for the job.
